Cost of Missed Appointments
Question
What has been the estimated total cost to the trust resulting from:
a) Missed outpatient appointments
b) Missed surgery appointments
for each financial year that the trust has been in existence?
Response
The Trust does not routinely calculate these figures. However there has been some recent work done on the costs of ‘Did not Attends’ (DNA) for outpatient appointments, which were calculated as £2.1 million in 2008/09 and £2.8 million in 2009/10. This is based on outpatient tariffs, and does not reflect all costs associated with patient non-attendance such as staff time, or the likelihood that the missed income would, in part, be offset by re-arranged attendances.
