Professor of Psychology is new Non-Executive Director

Professor Vicki Bruce OBE has been appointed to serve as a Non-Executive Director of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, the managing Trust of the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Her appointment takes effect from 1 April 2011 and will be for a period of four years until 31 March 2015.

Professor Bruce, who is Head of the School of Psychology at Newcastle University, is an Honorary Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the British Academy who has held senior academic posts throughout the UK.

She was previously a Professor of Psychology at the Universities of Nottingham and then Stirling, where she additionally assumed a role as Deputy Principal for Research, From 2002 to 2008 she was Vice Principal and Head of the College of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Edinburgh.

In 1997 Professor Bruce was awarded the OBE for services to psychology and also received the Presidents' Award from the British Psychological Society.

Professor Bruce’s appointment has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA) Code of Practice.  All Non-Executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for an appointee’s political activity (if any declared) to be made public.

Professor Bruce has declared no political activity in the last five years and has held no other ministerial appointments.

The position of a Non-Executive Director carries a remuneration of £6,096 a year, which is the current rate for all Non-Executive Directors of NHS Trusts.
