Staff in the Heart Centre in the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle have raised £1,400 after hosting a summer charity ball on Saturday 21 July in the Shepherds Inn & Auctioneer.

The money raised will go to the Heart Centre’s charitable funds and will be used to buy additional equipment, fund extra staff training and improve the environment for patients and relatives.

Caroline Shaw, Sister at the Heart Centre, said: “As a new, innovative team, we have taken it upon ourselves to raise funds to ensure our service is of the highest standard and remains up-to-date with all new findings in cardiac medicine. We are a passionate team and we want our centre to remain at the forefront of providing cardiac interventional treatment.

“The staff in the Heart Centre are all very proud of what we have achieved since the centre opened in November 201, as we continue to receive positive feedback from patients. The charity ball was a great way to celebrate the success of the centre and we would like to thank everybody who came along and made it such a fantastic night as well as helping us to raise funds for the centre.”

Since the centre opened at the end of last year, patients in north Cumbria have been benefitting from the provision of coronary angioplasty operations in the local area for the first time. A specialised operating theatre with X-ray imaging equipment and a hospital ward is located in a dedicated unit at the front of the hospital.

Patients with heart disease benefit from quick diagnosis and treatment, therefore the availability of immediate angioplasty locally is important in avoiding delay and reducing the risk of life threatening heart attacks for patients in Cumbria. The Heart Centre offers a dramatic improvement in cardiac care for the people of north Cumbria.

Following the success of the charity ball, the Heart Centre staff are planning to organise further fundraising events.
