The sisters are running in aid of Heart UK

A pharmacy technician at West Cumberland Hospital will run the London Marathon in memory of her uncle who died while training for this year’s event.

Debbie Hornsby will be joined by her sister Gemma, who works as a bank nurse on the children’s ward at West Cumberland Hospital

Their uncle, Mike Ellwood, died of a heart attack at the age of 59, three weeks before this year’s London Marathon which he was in training for.

The sisters are aiming to match their uncle’s previous time of four hours, three minutes and 19 seconds and hope to raise £5,000 for Heart UK. They will be joined in their efforts by two of their cousins – James Ellwood, who will run alongside them in the capital and Tony Ellwood, who is serving in Afghanistan and will run his own marathon at Camp Bastion.

Debbie said: “Considering I've not even run a race before, let alone a marathon, I know it's going to be tough. I know my uncle would be proud of us, not only for taking part, but raising money for a fantastic cause. Heart UK is a charity that our family is proud to support.”

Debbie and Gemma are also organising other fundraising events to boost their total. They are holding a charity night at Workington British Legion on 16 November with a silent auction, raffle, disco and singer.
