A leading nurse at North Cumbria University Hospitals has won a national award for her outstanding contribution to cancer nursing.

Consultant Cancer Nurse Helen Roe was awarded the UK Oncology Nursing Society’s President’s Award at the society’s national conference in Harrogate earlier this month.

The award is only given out once every two years and acknowledges all the work Helen has done throughout her career, particularly since becoming one of the UK’s first Consultant Cancer Nurses 11 years ago.

Outgoing President Cheryl Vidall told the conference Helen had been selected particularly for her work leading on online learning modules, her involvement in the development and publishing of position statements, and for her various publications on cancer nursing.

She said: “In my opinion, Helen has made an outstanding contribution to cancer nursing. I have worked with her closely over the past few years. Her knowledge, passion and professionalism is a rare thing to find in nursing today. I commend her commitment to cancer nursing and have found her to be a great support to me in my role whilst I was the UKONS President.

“I hope this award gives Helen some recognition for her contribution to the cancer nursing world. It is awarded to her from peers, which is the greatest recognition and accolade a cancer nurse can receive.”

Helen said: “The award was totally out of the blue, I had no idea whatsoever. I really wasn’t expecting it.”

Chris Platton, Acting Director of Nursing and Quality, told Helen: “This is excellent news and you should be really proud of yourself – well done. This is an excellent achievement for you, the team, the Trust and our patients.”

This is not Helen’s first awards success – in 2010 she won the Patients’ Award at North Cumbria University Hospitals’ Celebrating Excellence Awards, after being named Nurse of the Year at the previous year’s ceremony. She was also named one of the top five cancer nurse leaders in the UK by the Nursing Times in 2009, sits on the editorial board of the British Journal of Nursing and is an honorary lecturer at the University of Cumbria.
