A breastfeeding group set up in north Cumbria earlier this year is looking for support for a fundraising event next month.

Volunteers who run Wigton Breastfeeding Group are holding a nearly new sale in aid of the group, which supports women who may be having problems breastfeeding and offers a social get-together each week for new mums.

The sale is being held at Wigton Bowling Club on Saturday 17 November from 10am to 2pm. There will be stalls selling ‘pre-loved’ baby clothes, toys and other items, and baby-related and family-friendly businesses will also be there, including Usborne Books and Baby Sensory.

Wigton Breastfeeding Group is run by breastfeeding peer supporters, who have been trained to offer information and support to breastfeeding women. The group meets every Monday, except bank holidays, from 10am to 11.30am at Wigton Bowling Club. The sessions are free to attend and free tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.

Helen Dinning is one of the peer supporters who has helped run the group since it was set up in early 2012. She said: “The group has really taken off. Ladies come along if they need any support with breastfeeding if they have any issues, and it is also a social thing, which is really important when you have a new baby.

“The group is run by volunteers but we have a health professional there each week – either a midwife or someone from the health visiting team. We don’t receive any funding for the hire of the room or refreshments; it is all supported by fundraising. We did a sponsored pram push a few months ago and now we have organised this sale which hopefully should get us through the next few months and beyond.”

Stalls cost £5 for individuals or charities and £10 for businesses. Wigton Breastfeeding Group will also sell items over £20, for example second-hand prams, on behalf of individuals for 10% commission.

Helen Ferris, Infant Feeding Co-ordinator for North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust, said: “Breastfeeding gives babies the best possible start in life but it can be difficult for mums without proper support. Wigton Breastfeeding Group provides a real lifeline for women in that area. I am delighted with all the hard work the peer supporters have done and the scheme has been a big success.”
