A series of events are being held across north Cumbria to mark Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2013 starting with the launch at Morton Manor on Friday 21 June.

Helen Ferris, Infant Feeding Coordinator at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, said: “Breastfeeding gives babies the best possible start in life but it can be difficult for mums without proper support. The groups in north Cumbria provide women with the opportunity to speak to myself and the volunteer peer supporters who are women who have breastfed their own babies and know how tough it can be, and also how rewarding it can be. It also gives new mums the chance to speak to other new mums – to share their experiences and just to have a chat.

“The events which are happening this week and next week are important not only to raise funds but to spread the word about the support available to new mums in north Cumbria.”

The week of events includes:

  • Friday 21 June, 1.00-3.00pm – Launch of Breastfeeding Awareness Week at Morton Manor, Wigton Road. There will be a teddy bears picnic, sponsored buggy push/toddle, guess the weight of the cake, a raffle and free ‘booby buns’ and refreshments. The aim of the event is to raise money for new breast pumps and everyone is welcome – pregnant ladies, new mums and dads and grandparents
  •  Monday 24 June, 10.00-11.30am – Party at the Wigton breastfeeding group, Wigton Bowling Club
  •  Tuesday 25 June, 10.00-11.30am – Gentle keep fit and a strawberry tea at Longtown breastfeeding group, Longtown Children’s Centre
  •  Wednesday 26 June, 11.00-1.00pm - Free baby massage and cakes at the Old Hall Café at Petteril Bank Community School, Carlisle. Helen Ferris will be there to offer advice and support. The Breastfeeding Mums and Babes café at the Old Hall Café will still run as normal in the afternoon from 1.00-2.30pm
  •  Thursday 27 June – Helen Ferris and breastfeeding peer supporters will be in Mothercare in Carlisle in the morning and there will be gentle keep fit and a cream tea at the Belah breastfeeding group from 2.00-3.30pm at Belah Community Centre
  •  Friday 28 June, 11.30am-12.30pm – There will be a peer support certificate presentation to six newly-trained peers for the Carlisle area at Morton Manor which will be presented by Denise Lightfoot, Clinical Midwife Manager for North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust
  •  Sunday 30 June, 2.00pm – Breastfeeding peer supporters have organised a sponsored walk, starting from the Emmanuel Church in Dalzell Street, Moor Row. Refreshments and snacks will be provided and proceeds will go towards local breastfeeding support groups for mums in West Cumbria
