A grateful former patient has handed over £400 to a ward at the Cumberland Infirmary as a thank you to the staff who he feels saved his life.

Freemason Cyril Smith, 2012 Provincial Grand Primo for the Carlisle & District Province, was joined by past Provinicial Grand Primos to give the money to Beech A ward, where Mr Smith was treated in 2011.

Every year, as an order, they are committed to giving money to local charities and Mr Smith also had his own personal appeal as Provincial Grand Primo, so in total they were able to hand over a cheque for £400.

Grateful hospital staff including Consultant Gastroenterologist Dr Denis Burke and Charge Nurse Kevin Harrow accepted the kind donation for the ward.
