The NHS Trust Development Authority (NHS TDA) has confirmed the appointment of Professor Shirley Reveley as Non-Executive Director of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust.

A qualified nurse, midwife and health visitor, Professor Reveley also brings a huge amount of experience in the field of health education. She became Head of Nursing and Midwifery at St Martin’s College in 2002, before being appointed as the first Professor of Nursing at the Open University in 2005, running the distance learning pre-registration nursing programme. She went on to become Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Care until her retirement in 2010.

Professor Reveley has been a Non-Executive Director of NHS Cumbria for the past six years and is currently a public governor of Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. She is Visiting Professor at the University of Cumbria, where last year she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship for services to nursing and the development of the nurse practitioner programme.

Professor Reveley said: “I am very pleased to be appointed Non-Executive Director of North Cumbria University Hospitals. These are exciting times to be coming on board, as the acquisition process progresses. I have a lot of educational experience in nursing and in the healthcare professions in general so I am very keen to support developments in that area.”

Ian Gordon, Interim Chairman of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome someone with such a wealth of experience to our Trust Board. Education and training are vital to the development of our workforce and Professor Reveley has just the background and skills we need to push forward this agenda.”

Non-executive appointments to NHS Trusts made by the NHS TDA are subject to the Code of Practice of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

Professor Shirley Reveley has been appointed from 1 April 2013 until 31 December 2013 and is entitled to receive a remuneration of £6,096 per annum.
