North Cumbria launches mass recruitment drive to attract the best in the NHS

A national and international recruitment drive has been launched today (Monday 7 April) by North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust in a bid to attract the very best talent in the NHS to relocate to north Cumbria.

The Trust is aiming to attract the very best talented consultants, doctors and nurses to join its expert teams at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

The recruitment drive, ‘Looking for a fresh start’, will be launched at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) jobs fair in Glasgow this week and will also be unveiled at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) annual conference in Manchester in a few weeks’ time.

The campaign offers medical and nursing staff the chance to join an organisation which is currently undergoing transformational change with opportunities for staff to lead improvements alongside our ‘buddy’ trust Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. It will also showcase the new £90 million West Cumberland Hospital which will be completed in December 2014 and promote north Cumbria as a fantastic place to live and work.

Two of the Trust’s newly-recruited consultants, Dr Jason Gane (consultant paediatrician) and Dr Joanna Cox (consultant in elderly care) who are both based at West Cumberland Hospital, are supporting the recruitment drive.

Dr Jason Gane started with the Trust in March 2014 after relocating with his wife and two year-old son from London. The family spent most of their holidays in the Lake District since they moved to the UK from South Africa ten years ago.

Dr Gane said: “We decided to relocate to Cumbria for the quality of life and beautiful scenery. I love the sense of community here and driving to work with a view of the surrounding mountains is fantastic.

“When this position came up I actually brought my training forward by six months to enable me to take the job – it was exactly what I was looking for with more patient involvement in the role.

“My wife is expecting our second child and I think Cumbria is the perfect place to raise a family.”

Dr Joanna Cox also started with the Trust in March and is already putting plans in place to develop elderly care services in West Cumbria. Dr Cox has relocated from Newcastle where she worked at North Tyneside General Hospital, part of the Northumbria Trust.

After getting a taste of life in north Cumbria last summer when she spent a month working at the Cumberland Infirmary, she decided to make the move across to West Cumbria.

Dr Cox said: “Along with the team, I have huge ambitions for our services here – it may take some time to realise our ambitions but with the support of the local community and our health partners, we will get there. The opening of the new hospital next year is a hugely important milestone for healthcare for West Cumbria and our organisation and now is a very exciting time to be part of North Cumbria.”

The recruitment campaign will also focus on attracting further nursing staff in both hospitals in a variety of areas. The ongoing expansion of nursing teams in North Cumbria remains a key focus for the Trust in order to ensure the delivery of safe and effective nursing care at all times and continuously improve quality of care for patients.

One of the Trust’s latest nursing recruits, Hannah Godfrey, relocated to Carlisle from her home town of Edinburgh to start work in the Cumberland Infirmary.

Hannah said: “I started to look for a nursing job outside of Scotland because I really wanted to work in emergency care and there were no opportunities locally. When I came to Carlisle for my interview, it was the first time I had ever visited the city and I was very impressed with what I saw.

“Everybody has been very welcoming at North Cumbria and I am very excited to be joining the organisation at such an important time. I love the pressure of working in emergency care and am really looking forward to making a difference and playing my part in the Trust’s improvement plans.”

Dr Jeremy Rushmer, medical director, said: “The Trust is entering a very exciting phase of development, delivering our safety and quality improvements and working very closely with our official buddy trust Northumbria Healthcare.

“There can be no denying the historical problems we have faced with recruitment but we are genuinely excited about the opportunities which lie ahead, especially with the new West Cumberland Hospital opening and the overall positive direction which the organisation is now taking.
