NHS Staff Survey results show positive change in North Cumbria

Results from the 2013 NHS staff survey published today demonstrate the steady progress being made to improve safety and quality of care at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Although the Trust remains amongst the lowest 20 per cent of acute NHS organisations nationally, significant improvements have been made across all indictors, with more and more staff feeling better engaged with the positive changes and improvements that are taking place.

North Cumbria was ranked amongst the best performing NHS Trusts nationally on a number of indicators including the reporting of incidents, with 92% of staff now reporting errors, near misses or incidents. This exceeds the national average of 90% and is an improvement on the Trust’s score of 85% from 2012, demonstrating the real focus on improving patient safety since the Keogh Review last summer. 

The Trust was also amongst the best performing NHS organisations in England for the number of staff receiving health and safety training (87%) and equality and diversity training (75%) – another of the core recommendations from the Keogh Review. 

Overall, more staff at North Cumbria would recommend the organisation as a place to work or receive treatment, with 45 per cent agreeing that patient care is the organisation’s top priority – an increase of ten per cent since 2012. 87 per cent of staff feel their role makes a difference to patients and 72 per cent feel satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they deliver - close to the national average of 76 per cent. 

More staff at North Cumbria have also reported good communication between senior management and staff with 14 per cent of the workforce now feeling better engagement – this represents a 6 per cent improvement from the 8 per cent figure which has remained static since 2011 and is a positive step towards the national average of 29 per cent. 

Less staff (23 per cent) have reported experiencing harassment, bullying or abuse in the past 12 months, which is an improvement from the 2012 figure of 31 per cent and is now better than the national average of 24 per cent. 

During the past year, 71 per cent of staff at North Cumbria have worked extra hours, just over the national average of 70 per cent, representing an increase of six per cent since 2012.

Ann Farrar, Chief Executive of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Today’s staff survey results demonstrate the tangible improvements that are now starting to take place across our hospitals in North Cumbria and are testament the hard work and commitment of all our frontline teams to improve safety and quality.

“The past year has been a really important one and it is with great pride to see that more of our staff now feel that delivering high quality patient care is the organisation’s top priority and also that we are now ranking amongst the best in the NHS for staff feeling able to openly report incidents.

“We wholly heartedly appreciate just how much our staff go the extra mile, working extra hours and going beyond the call of duty to put patients first and they are the reason why 89 per cent of our patients rate their care with us as ‘excellent’, ‘very good’ or ‘good’.

“Although these results are without doubt a step in the right direction, we know there is still much work to be done and it vital that we now continue on this road of improvement.”
