Medical staff at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle will welcome local school students who are considering studying medicine on Friday 27 June and Saturday 28 June 2014.

The two-day careers event which will be attended by around 60 local sixth form or GCSE students, will offer students the chance to meet senior and junior medical staff and to gain top tips for medical school entry.

The event is being held in the Education Centre at the Cumberland Infirmary and will feature a series of interactive sessions and workshops held by North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust’s top clinicians. The sessions will cover a range of topics such as:

  • How to get into medical school
  • Women in medicine
  • Cancer
  • Paediatric care
  • Academic medicine
  • Obstetrics
  • Radiology
  • Cardiology
  • Stroke medicine
  • General practice
  • Career path in medicine
  • Life as a junior doctor
  • Ears, nose and throat (ENT)
  • Gastroenterology
  • A patient’s journey

Mr Andrew Robson, consultant ENT surgeon and course director, said: “I am very much looking forward to welcoming aspiring medical students to the Cumberland Infirmary on Friday and Saturday this week.

“It is incredibly important to nurture talent and provide support to these students who may be part of the future of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust.”

The event comes after the Trust launched a national recruitment campaign ‘Looking for a fresh start’, in a bid to attract the very best talent in the NHS to relocate to north Cumbria.

The Trust is looking for consultants, doctors and nurses to join its expert teams at both the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven. The campaign offers medical and nursing staff the chance to join an organisation which is currently undergoing transformational change with opportunities for staff to lead improvements alongside our ‘buddy’ trust Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Staff from our hospitals have been attending events up and down the country and will be at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) jobs fair in Manchester on 1 and 2 July.
