A nurse at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust has been selected to take part in the highly prestigious Health Education North West clinical academic training internship programme.

Resuscitation training officer David Miller was chosen for the six-month internship from registered health professionals across the north of England following an application and interview where he had to present areas of clinical research he hoped to focus on.

The internship, funded by Health Education England, means David will spend a total of 38 days over the first six months of 2016 working on research projects. The areas he will be focussing on include anaesthetics in the over 75s; and an observational study on how the decision to take patients into intensive care is made.

The internship aims to provide dedicated time to develop skills and expertise in aspects of clinical academic research, away from the day-to-day work, and David will also become a ‘research champion’ for the Trust.

David said: “I’m really looking forward to starting the internship. When I first heard about it, I drew up the proposals I was interested in researching and had a lot of support from the resus team, my manager and the director of nursing.

“The internship will give me the chance to go to different hospitals throughout the North West to assist in research, supervised and mentored by an experienced research supervisor. It is a fantastic opportunity."
