The new West Cumberland Hospital

As the opening of the new £90 million West Cumberland Hospital in October 2015 fast approaches, North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust have, for some time, been working with the existing contractors to plan the second phase of the redevelopment which involves transforming parts of the existing hospital building.

The Outline Business Case (OBC) with a total capital cost of £31.795m for phase two was approved by the NHS Trust Development Authority in January 2015 subject to approval of the Final Business Case (FBC). Since the beginning of the year, the Trust has been working very closely with Laing O’Rourke and other partners to plan the work required for phase two and to secure a contract to deliver this programme of work.

However, it has become clear that estimated costs to fulfil the work required are currently around 30% higher than initially provided. As a result, the Trust is reviewing the position to understand why this has occurred and look at what options are available to the Trust to support the next phase of the redevelopment. The change in estimated cost for phase two does not affect the opening of the new hospital later this year.

Les Morgan, director of redevelopment for the Trust, said: “We are naturally very shocked at the increase in costs quoted for phase two of our redevelopment and we are disappointed in our construction partner, Laing O’Rourke, who we have worked with to successfully deliver the new hospital building (phase one).

“Our aim is to ensure that any further investment into West Cumberland Hospital is focussed on making a long and lasting impact on the provision of health and care services in West Cumbria and across the county.

“We will now focus on working towards a positive solution for the next phase of the redevelopment as we look forward to opening the doors of the brand new hospital to patients in only 16 weeks’ time.”
