The £90 million new West Cumberland Hospital is expected to open its doors to patients this autumn.

The hospital suffered a setback earlier this year when a fire caused extensive damage to the Energy Centre in January 2015. The new hospital building did not suffer any damage but was left without any source of electrical power or heating.

Whilst no final cause for the fire has been established yet, the Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service has stated that there is ‘no evidence of malicious intent.’

A temporary power supply was established in the new hospital only a week after the fire to ensure work could recommence as quickly as possible. The Trust’s estates & facilities team and new hospital project team have continued to make good progress in developing plans and options to re-establish permanent heat and power supplies.

Les Morgan, director of redevelopment at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: ““Following the fire it has been important for us to carefully consider and test all of the options we had in order to allow us to move forward both quickly and, most importantly, safely.

“We are very pleased to say that we are now back on track and the hospital will be opening to patients in Autumn this year. This is a real testament to the hard work and determination of our staff.

“We look forward to arranging public open days in the coming months to allow members of the local community to come and view their fantastic new hospital before we open the doors later this year.”
