A new Medical Procedures Unit has opened today at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle which will focus on patients who require day case treatment.

The unit, which is based on the ground floor of the hospital close to the main entrance, offers patients more comfort and privacy and avoids the need for admission to a hospital bed.

A dedicated and experienced nursing team will be caring for patients who may attend the hospital on a regular basis for treatment such as infusions of biological therapies and blood transfusions, or require a day case treatment (e.g. some guided biopsies or drainage of fluid). Previously, these treatments would have been undertaken in a variety of different settings across the hospital.

Dr Denis Burke, business unit director for emergency care and medicine at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Our teams in specialties such as gastroenterology, renal, rheumatology and respiratory have all developed their plans for the new unit in order to enhance care for day-case patients. The unit will also free up hospital beds to ensure patients who are seriously ill can be given a bed in the most appropriate area for their care as quickly as possible.”

Kevin Harrow, ward manager in the new Medical Procedures Unit, said: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming our patients to the new unit today where our nursing team will be on-hand to provide treatment in a comfortable environment.”

The unit will be open Monday-Friday from 8.00am-6.00pm.
