Patients representatives needed to help shape and improve care

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking current or previous patients to be part of a panel to improve our services.

Patient Panel is an independent voluntary group of people who assist the Trust in providing improved communication and information between patients, relatives, carers, staff and the Trust Board to help improve service provision. Members review and make suggestions for ways and means of improving the quality and accessibility of services.

The Panel is currently looking to recruit more volunteers who will listen to issues raised, relating to both satisfaction and concerns, that are brought to their attention by others and they will advise and make positive suggestions to the Trust directly.

Members of the panel can also comment and make observations on policies that influence patient care, safety and service provision. They are also invited to sit in on committees and participate in audits with staff.

There are currently two branches to Patient Panel - one in Carlisle and one in Whitehaven.

Maurya Cushlow, executive director of nursing & midwifery at the Trust, said: “The Patient Panel contributes greatly to improvements that are made within the Trust. They are real patients with real experience, so who better to work with us to make our services the best they can possibly be? Whilst staff and management have a fantastic insight of how to improve care, it’s also important that we see things from the perspective of patients, and working with the panel volunteers allows us to do that. We are seeking more members to further build on the good work that has already been done.”

Prospective applicants are welcome to attend a panel meeting, meet members and decide if it’s something they want to be part of.
