New dates for Intensive Care support group

Posted on Tuesday 12th January 2016

A support group for former intensive care patients and their loved ones set up last year by staff at West Cumberland Hospital is aiming to go from strength to strength in 2016.

ICU Steps Cumbria is a patient support group which was set up to help patients and their relatives who have been affected by critical illness. The aim of the group is to provide an opportunity for patients and families to discuss and share both their physical and emotional experiences of having had a stay on the Intensive Care Unit.

The group offers the chance to meet and talk with others who have been in the same situation, and also to speak to staff to fill in the blanks of their time when critically ill on the unit.

ICU sister Jackie Fox said: “Former patients and their families who have attended the meetings so far have found them very useful. We will be having more guest speakers at forthcoming meetings, so hopefully people will keep coming back and get something different out of each session, and of course new people are always welcome.”

Meetings are held every six weeks on Wednesdays from 2-4pm at St Begh’s Social Centre, Coach Road, Whitehaven. The dates for 2016 are:

  • 13 January 2016
  • 23 March 2016
  • 4 May 2016
  • 15 June 2016
  • 27 July 2016

The meetings are free to attend and tea and coffee will be available. For more information, please contact Jackie Fox, Priya George or Louise McCreadie on 01946 523443.
