New 3D breast imaging launched at the Cumberland Infirmary

New 3D breast imaging technology has been installed at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust in order to improve the assessment of breast lesions. The Trust is one of a small number nationally who are now using this technology for biopsy procedures and the early feedback is positive with patients travelling from further afield such as the North East to undergo a 3D biopsy procedure.

The Trust has purchased the technology at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle in order to deliver an advanced imaging technique that has numerous advantages over traditional 2D biopsy procedure, including:

  • Easy and fast targeting of lesions in the breast that are not always detected in 2D imaging
  • Improved cancer outcomes for patients through a more advanced imaging technology for the biopsy procedure
  • Shorter patient procedure time for patients

The Breast Radiology service at the Trust delivers mammography and a range of interventional biopsy procedures and continues to see an increasing number of patients.

Richard Sterry, operational services manager for Radiology, said: “This is a very positive step to improve the early diagnosis of breast cancer for patients. The 3D biopsy imaging is a much more effective option for patients undergoing a biopsy and this investment in technology is enabling clinicians to deliver more accurate targeting during biopsies through an exceptional standard of diagnostic imaging with tomosynthesis technology.

“As well as giving our patients an improved experience, the purchase of this 3D imaging technology demonstrates the Trust’s absolute commitment to enhancing clinical services. We’re delighted to be able to deliver this enhanced level of diagnostic imaging to patients across North Cumbria.”
