Aspiring medical students from across West, North & East Cumbria are coming to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for a ‘Career in Medicine’ event starting tomorrow.

The two-day event to be held on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 July is now in its third year of seeking to inspire potential medical students into taking up the profession.

The event invites local school students from across years 11-13 who are considering studying medicine or pharmacy the chance to meet senior and junior medical staff and to gain top tips for medical school entry. The event is also open to anybody who has already left school and is considering studying medicine as a postgraduate degree. All those attending either attend school or are primarily a resident in the areas the Trust’s two hospitals serve – i.e. the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Around 60 aspiring medical students attended last year from across the north of the county including Whitehaven, Keswick, Wigton, Penrith and Carlisle. The feedback received from the students after the event was very positive. Examples of feedback received include:

“Yesterday and today's lectures and workshops were amazing! Really enjoyed it.”

“My friends and I appreciate everything that this event provided us with, the knowledge and the experience of actually being able to work with doctors and professionals.”
