Fundraisers with staff from the departments

Two couples from north Cumbria have raised over £2,600 for the cardiology department and Heart Centre at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

Fred Harrison raised £2,099 at his 70th birthday party, held at the Shepard’s Inn, Carlisle. Fred and his wife organised the event, which included live music, to celebrate Fred’s seventh decade and decided it should raise money to benefit people all across the county.

The kind-hearted couple have organised events for Hospice at Home and Jigsaw before, and wanted to further help people in Cumbria. They said: “We had a fantastic time at the party and we’d like to say a huge thank you to our guests for their generosity.”

The money will go towards renovating the clean utility unit on the cardiology department. This will make life much easier for the staff on the ward, meaning they will have more time to spend with patients.

Rachel Eastham, ward manager, said: “I am truly grateful to Mr and Mrs Harrison for their generosity. This money will go towards making a heavily used area of the ward more efficient and mean we can be more efficient and have more patient time.”

Gillian and Douglas Macmillan raised £600 for the Heart Centre at their diamond wedding anniversary party, held at Carlisle Golf Club. Gillian and Douglas organised the event to celebrate their sixty years of marriage and decided it should raise money to benefit people all across the county.

The centre is very close to the Macmillan’s hearts as they both received treatment there in the last year. The couple said: “We really can’t thank all the staff here enough for what they do. We had an amazing time at the party and it’s thanks to our guests for their generosity.”

Caroline Shaw, ward manager, said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to Mr and Mrs Macmillan for their donation. This will go towards improving the facilities within the Heart Centre for our cardiac patients in Cumbria.”
