Endoscopy Unit Patient Survey shows overwhelming satisfaction

The Endoscopy Units at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust’s two hospitals have received praise from the latest results of a 2016 patients’ survey.

The survey was conducted on 500 patients who underwent an endoscopic procedure at either the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisleor West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven as part of an annual survey.

The results show that 100% of patients felt that attempts were made to maintain their privacy and dignity at all times during their stay on the Endoscopy unit.

Consultant Gastroenterologist and Associate Medical Director, Dr. Denis Burke said: “We are very pleased with the results of the survey which validate our belief that our service and quality of care is of a high standard. This is also a testament to the staff who work  extremely hard day in, day out. ”

Patients were asked to comment on any aspect of their care which they especially appreciated, or any other concerns.  One patient wrote: “Dislike the test, but staff excellent.”  Another wrote: “I felt a little emotional but in good hands.”

The survey also highlighted some areas where improvement in services was needed and action on those items is already underway.

As a result of the survey the Admissions team of the Endoscopy unit is working on a new template that will allow them the flexibility of providing staggered admission times to reduce waiting times for patients.

The Admissions team will also continue to identify when delays are known and improve communication with patients as delays build up.  Actions are already underway to change the wording in a letter that patients receive about their appointments that delays are possible because of the nature of the procedure.
