Advanced Clinical Practitioner Team - #YouDidIt

Staff at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust have been recognised for their remarkable contributions as part of a new staff reward scheme.

The #YouDidIt awards are conducted on a quarterly basis, awarding both an individual and a team award.  Staff can nominate a colleague or team who have gone above and beyond, demonstrating the Trust’s values and behaviours over a prolonged period of time for the benefit of patients and staff. The nominations then go to a panel made up of staff members and staff representatives.

The winner of the individual award for this quarter was Sandra Haley (known as Scotty to her colleagues), healthcare assistant on the Emergency Assessment Unit at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. Scotty has developed a training programme for her colleagues to support a dignified death for patients. She regularly chooses to care for the sickest patients, ensuring compassion, caring and dignity is maintained at all times while always having a smile and a cheery disposition. She is a role model for fellow healthcare assistants, junior nurses and students. She also supports new members of the team to learn the ropes of working on a busy Emergency Assessment Unit.  During the recent Rapid Process Improvement Workshop, Scotty took on the responsibility for ‘5S-ing’ the ward. This involved ensuring a tidier and ordered working environment as well as saving time for clinicians in order to free up time to care for patients.

The team award went to the Advanced Clinical Practitioner team/Physician Associate team at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven (WCH). The team continuously provides excellent quality of clinical care for patients across the hospital. They provide continuity; sustainability and a high standard of care that helped improve the Trust’s CQC rating in medicine and get the Trust out of special measures earlier this year. The Advanced Clinical Practitioner team are the key to our success in developing the new model of staffing at WCH and are passionate about training and developing the services for their local community ensuring patients receive the high quality standard of care we can provide.

Stephen Eames, chief executive at the Trust, said: “The staff recognition awards are an excellent opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to staff and teams who have gone above and beyond in their roles. It is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the hard of work of our staff in providing the best possible care they can for patients in North Cumbria. Well done to our winners this quarter.”

The team and individual winners from each quarter will be invited to a lunch with the Trust board to personally celebrate their achievements and overall winners of the year will be announced.
