Trust brings together nursing staff for day of learning

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust held its annual nursing conference at the start of the month where ideas, learning and stories of excellent care were shared.

The event, ‘Delivering Improvement – Striving for Excellence’ saw over 100 nurses, midwives and allied health professionals join together to learn how they can continue to make the difference to our patients’ lives.

The day hosted talks from external speakers as well as from the Trust’s staff who shared their knowledge and experience with the room and the excellent work they are doing. There were also workshops where staff learnt about improving patient experience, reducing waste, and process mapping.

The attendees also heard how a recent Falls Improvement Collaborate has reduced falls by 19 percent in the two wards it was conducted on and how this will be rolled out across the Trust. A reduction in patient falls is a huge boost to the safety and the teams will continue to make improvements for the benefit of our patients.

Feedback from staff who attended on the day was really positive with all of those rating the event as good, very good or excellent.

The event was closed by nurse and poet Molly Case, cardiac nurse at King’s College Hospital, who delivered an enrapturing performance of three of her poems which really captivated the room and inspired everyone who attended.

Maurya Cushlow, executive director of nursing at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust said: “The day was a fabulous celebration of excellent practice and learning. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the speakers and it really highlights the excellent work our staff do every day for our patients.”

Anna Stabler, deputy director of nursing, midwifery and AHPs at the Trust, said: “Our staff do a fantastic job and the day really showcased all of the improvements we’re making as a Trust.”
