Nursing and midwifery recruitment day to showcase opportunities in Cumbria

The NHS in Cumbria is opening its doors to nurses and midwifes looking for new roles through a hands on recruitment day in June.

Nurses and midwifes at all stages of their career are invited to attend – from those considering the profession and students soon to graduate to those looking to return to practice or simply make their next career move.

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust (NCUH), Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) and North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) will be working together to host a recruitment day at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. They will be joined by the University of Cumbria so health professionals of the future can hear first-hand about training and working in Cumbria.

There will be workshops and site tours of the Cumberland Infirmary, West Cumberland Infirmaries, Ambulance station and other local health services. Interviews will also take place for attendees on the day to speed up the recruitment process.

This follows two previous events which resulted in the successful recruitment of 67 new staff. Freya Lama recently joined CPFT as a mental health nurse on Yewdale Ward at the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven after meeting the team one of these events. Freya said:

“I saw the recruitment fair advertised on NHS jobs and decided to go along. It was a really fun day and gave me a good understanding of what to expect from a career in Cumbria. The team made so much effort and even took myself and another attendee, who is soon to join CPFT, around Carleton Clinic. They told us about their career paths and made us feel so welcome.”

This is the first time that the University of Cumbria has joined the event. Louise Nelson, Head of Nursing at the University of Cumbria, commented:

“This gives us a great opportunity to meet students considering a career in nursing or midwifery. It’s fantastic for them to meet clinical staff on a hospital site as well as talk to tutors about our courses. We hope that it will encourage students to train in Cumbria but also open their eyes to the range of opportunities on offer and inspire them to stay once they graduate.”

By working together the teams are able to showcase the wide range of opportunities on offer in Cumbria. Amanda Dunkley, HR Project Manager at CPFT and NCUH, added:

“We have such a wide range of roles and development opportunities across the health and care system for all levels of experience. It’s great to be able to work together and showcase these in one place. I’d encourage anyone considering, or looking to progress, a nursing or midwifery career to come along and meet the teams. It could be the start of an exciting new chapter!”

The recruitment day will take place on 23 June, 10.00 – 16.00, at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
