Local school pupils help to spread data security message for the NHS

Posted on Monday 18th February 2019

Pupils from St Michael’s C.E Primary School, Carlisle have been working to add artistic flair to a new public data security leaflet to be used across two local NHS trusts.

The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) affect how organisations treat data and information, and staff at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust (NCUH) and Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) wanted to help bring to life a new patient information leaflet on the subject.

The Subject Access Coordinators within the Information Governance team contacted the school’s head teacher Mrs Paisley who arranged for the year 5 and year 6 pupils to create images for the leaflet to help engage with the public. It was also a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn about data security and how their data is used.

Anne Gadsden, information governance officer at NCUH said: “This was a fantastic idea from the team and we’ve loved working with the children. They were given a short brief and then let their imaginations run wild.

“The pictures are wonderful and make the leaflet much more engaging and easier to read, the feedback we’ve received so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the pupils who took part and St Michael’s C.E Primary School for working with us.”

Mrs Paisley added: “We were delighted to be involved in this project, designing artwork to sit alongside the information in the GDPR leaflet which had been produced by the Information Governance Team.

“It was a brilliant way for us to begin to explore some of the issues around data protection with our older pupils and how this affects them now and will continue to in the future. The children loved being part of the designing of the leaflet and were really motivated by the fact that it will be available to the public.  There is something very rewarding and satisfying about seeing your ideas and artwork in print.”
