Dietetics

General introduction

The following information refers to the service delivered by the team at the Cumberland Infirmary. For details of the Dietetic Service delivered in West Cumbria please see the NHS Cumbria website.

The Dietetic Department provides a comprehensive, up-to-date, evidence based service for the nutritional management and treatment of disease for the patients and staff of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, NHS Cumbria areas formerly known as Carlisle & District PCT and Eden Valley PCT, and Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

The department comprises of three teams ie acute, community and mental health who are responsible for the delivery of the service under the management and leadership of the Dietetic Services Manager.

The acute team provides an inpatient and outpatient service to the Cumberland Infirmary.

The community team provides a service to all 34 GP practices in east Cumbria, the five community hospitals and care homes in the area. The community team also has a remit for health promotion.

The mental health team provides an inpatient service to Carleton Clinic. A specialist service for eating disorders is provided for north Cumbria.

What we do

The department is the main source of specialised and expert information on diet and health ranging from highly specialised treatments for patients with chronic disease to the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Information and help is requested and provided to consultants, GPs, nurses, allied health professionals, the general public and the local media.

The department is accredited to train student dietitians in partnership with Chester University.

The department works in partnership with all health professionals in the area to develop and write guidelines/policies for the treatment and management of nutritional problems arising from acute or chronic illness as well as strategies to promote health and prevent disease.

The department is based at the Cumberland Infirmary on the ground floor of the old Trust HQ building, known as the 'pillared building'.
