Getting to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle

Patient Transport Service

The Patient Transport Service to our hospitals is co-ordinated by North West Ambulance Service. If you are on a low income you may be eligible for help with travel costs.

By bus:

Stagecoach run buses frequently to the Cumberland Infirmary from the centre of Carlisle and the surrounding area. You can read more about their services here or call them on 0871 200 22 33. (Calls cost 10p per minute from a BT landline, calls from other service providers and calls from mobiles may vary).

By train:

If you are arriving into Carlisle by train, bus services 60, 67 and 68 to the Cumberland Infirmary can all be caught near the train station, from just outside the Courts. The Courts are located just up the hill from the station, on your left heading away from the station entrance. There is a large red brick building with five bus stops outside, it is the second bus stop. Image of The Courts.

Alternatively, there is a taxi rank directly outside the train station.

Walking from the train station to the Cumberland Infirmary is approximately 1.2 miles and takes around 30 minutes. Routes and maps can be found here.

By car:

If you are using satellite navigation the postcode for the Cumberland Infirmary is CA2 7HY.

From M6:
Exit M6 at Junction 44 and head towards A689W (Workington). Follow the A689 towards Workington for roughly 3 miles, crossing the river until you reach a roundabout with a left turn (first exit) signposted “City Centre, Newtown Ind Est, B5307” it is also marked as “H A&E”. Head straight down the B5307 for roughly 1.5 miles and the hospital is on the left at a major set of traffic lights.

From West Cumbria:
Follow the A595 all the way into Carlisle. When you reach the roundabout by McVitie's biscuit factory, take the first exit onto Caldcotes, (signposted B5307 - Kirkbride) and continue past Port Road Industrial Estate. Entrance to the Cumberland Infirmary is second right at the traffic signals.
