If you have been referred to hospital but don't need to stay overnight, it means you're being treated as an outpatient or a day case. 

This section of our website is dedicated to our outpatients. Here you will find lots of information that will help you with your appointment and find your way around our hospitals. Just navigate using the links on the left of the page to find the information you need.

Translator services

If English is not a fluent language for you and you would like an interpreter to help you during your visit to the hospital, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service and they will be able to help you. 

If you are a hearing or speech-impaired patient and need a qualified communicator, please let our staff know (by fax or via Typetalk) and they can arrange assistance for you.

Sign language interpreters
The Trust has a contract with Deaf Vision to supply sign language interpreters to assist patients and relatives on a 24 hours a day basis. You can find help with this also through our Patient Advice and Liaison Service.

Help with Travel costs

You may be able to claim a refund under the 'Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme' (HTCS) of the cost of travelling to hospital or other NHS premises for NHS-funded treatment or diagnostic test - find out if you may be eligible.

If you have a low income, you may be able to get help with NHS costs through the NHS Low Income Scheme (LIS) - find out if you may be eligible.

On arrival at the hospital, please ensure you make yourself known to reception staff in the relevant area.

You may see either your consultant or another doctor working in the same clinical team. You may see a nurse beforehand who may carry out some preliminary tests, such as measuring your blood pressure.

During and after your consultation

Training doctors 
Our senior clinicians sometimes carry out training for their junior doctors and you may be asked if it is okay if they join your consultation. If you would prefer not to have a junior doctor present at your consultation, do make this known to staff. 

After your consultation 
Once you have seen a doctor, a member of staff will tell you if you need to visit other parts of the hospital for further tests, such as x-rays. The clinic nurse will explain what the tests involve and how to get there, so please ensure you report to the nurse before you go. 

If your doctor or nurse gives you a prescription, you can collect this from the hospital pharmacy. 

Please note that with all NHS prescriptions, you will have to pay prescriptions charges unless you are exempt. Please bring proof of your exemption with you, such as an income support book. 

Follow-up appointments If you need another appointment, you will be given a form to take to the Outpatients reception desk before you leave.

Communication with your GP 
Following your appointment with us, the doctor you have seen will send a letter to your GP outlining the outcomes of the outpatient appointment. If you need further advice once you have been seen by us, please talk to your GP.
